MANTELL, Gideon. The Fossils of the South Downs; or, Illustrations of the Geology of Sussex. London: Lupton Relfe, 1822. First edition, 4to (297 x 236mm.) Half-title, 42 aquatint and engraved plates by Mrs. Mantell, including 1 hand-coloured map and 2 folding, 4pp. ‘Subscribers’, 1p. publisher’s advertisement to rear. (2 plates replaced with facsimiles, some spotting and marginal damp-staining to plates, corner creases to pp.177-179, marginal tear to p.326, label remains to initial blank.) Near contemporary red half morocco (extremities heavily rubbed). Provenance: Edward Wyndham Penruddocke and Murial Turner Newcommen (bookplate to front pastedown); West Sussex County Council (labels to pastedowns).
