EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED. - Charles DICKENS. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. London: Chapman and Hall, 1837. 2 vols., first edition in book form, early printing, 8vo (212 x 122mm.) 43 plates by 'Phiz' and Robert Seymour, including the 2 suppressed plates by R.W. Buss and extra-illustrated with 32 plates by Thomas Onwhyn. (Spotting and browning to the plates and moderately to the text, lacking half-title.) Late 19th century blue calf, double fillet borders with elaborate floral corners in gilt to upper and lower covers, four raised bands to the spines, lettering pieces to the second and third compartments, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (rubbing to extremities, some surface scuffing.) Note: the Thomas Onwhyn plates, also of 1837, are signed in the name of 'Sam Weller', a character in the novel. They were published by E. Gratton and are captioned with excerpts from the text.

BURRIDGE, Ezek. Historia Nuperae Rerum Mutationis in Anglia. London: J.H. and A.J. Churchill, 1697. 8vo (186 x 112mm.) (Browning to margins, spotting to front and rear preliminaries, lacking rear blank.) Contemporary speckled calf blind-tooled, six compartments to spine with raised bands and lettered in gilt to second, repeating gilt design to rest (rebacked with original spine laid down). - And two further volumes (including T. Rees's 'A Topographical and Historical Description of South Wales', [n.d. but 1815], 8vo) (3).

PONTOPPIDAN, Erich. Den Danske Atlas eller Konge-Riget Dannemark. Copenhagen: Hartvig Godiche, 1763-1768. 4 vols., (vols 1,3,4 and 6 only), 4to (213 x 163mm.) Numerous engraved plates in volume 4, many folding, black letter, titles, engraved colophons to rear. (Occasional tear to plates, browning, some spotting.) Contemporary calf (2), contemporary panelled calf (2) (inner joint splitting to volume 3, some loss and wear to spine ends). - And a volume in German (Johann Hubner's 'Biblischen Historien', 1775, 12mo) (5).

COMMON PRAYER, In English. The Book of Common Prayer. Cambridge: 1776. 8vo (195 x 123mm.) (Mild browning.) Contemporary black diced calf, spine gilt, g.e. (extremities lightly bumped, extremities slightly rubbed, boards slightly bowed). Provenance: Joshua Smith (armorial bookplate to front pastedown); Miss Smith (pencil inscription opposing title-page and pencil notes to the reverse of title-page). - And six more of similar interest (7).

Portrait frontispiece, 2 engraved plates as titles, as issued, 7 engraved plates. (Minor soiling, some damp-staining to titles.) Mid-19th century red morocco, elaborate blind-tooling to covers and turn-ins, gilt lettering to spine, g.e. (rubbing to extremities). - And two more volumes by Bunyan (3).

Third edition, corrected and enlarged, 4to (194 x 156mm.) Frontispiece, five double-page engraved plates. (One plate torn at fold, slight marginal loss to frontispiece, occasional contemporary 'x' marks in ink, some creasing, browning.) Contemporary calf, title to spine (rubbing to extremities, slight loss to spine ends, title faded). Engraved vignette to title, titles in red and black, initials, staves to rear, engraved colophon, 19pp. blank to rear. (Contemporary underlining in ink, damp-stain to lower margin throughout, browning, a typed-written two paragraph insert explaining the history and meaning of the 'Caeremonialis Episcoporum' tipped-in to the front-free endpaper.) Contemporary calf, elaborate blind-tooled decoration around a gilt foliate lozenge to upper and lower covers (rubbed, spine missing). (Damp-stain to inner top corner of all leaves, some other minor soiling.) Contemporary speckled calf (slightly scuffed, loss to spine end, one preliminary blank loosely inserted).

BIBLE, In German. Das Neue Testament unsers Herrn Jesu Christi… D. Martin Luther. Amsterdam: Bey Heinrich Wetstein und Frantz Hallma, 1704. 12mo (162 x 94mm.) Black letter, 2 title vignettes, 2 folding maps, with the 'Psalmen David' included. (Repair to title-page, G10-G12 burnt with loss, D8-D9 burnt with loss, soiling.) Contemporary calf with raised bands (fading gilt to spine).

THE NOVELIST'S MAGAZINE. - Miguel de Saavedra CERVANTES. The History and Adventures of the Renowned Don Quixote. London: for Harrison and Co., 1782. 4 parts in 1 vol., 8vo (206 x 119mm.) 14 engraved plates by Stothard. (Occasional browning.) Contemporary calf, six compartments to spine with raised bands, red and green morocco lettering pieces to the second and third compartments, elaborate gilt to the rest (rubbing to extremities). Note: this is vol. 8 from 'The Novelist's Magazine' and includes a complete edition of 'Don Quixote'.

[Bound with:] Two right profitable and fruitfull concordances. London: Robert Barker, 1607; [Bound with:] The Whole Booke of Psalmes. London: 1607. 8vo (222 x 154mm.) (Lacking Old Testament title-page and all leaves prior to ¶3, somewhat affected by damp, many leaves torn with varying degrees of loss, worst to New Testament title and preceding leaf, some loss replaced or reinforced with blank paper, worm damage to first 129pp. often affecting text, some browning and ink staining.) Contemporary calf, the spine later dated 1615 in gilt, brass bosses and clasp (rebacked and reinforced under original calf, one clasp lacking the other replaced, some brass mounts replaced).

[Bound with:] The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments. Cambridge: Thomas Buck and Roger Daniel, 1637. With 7pp. of tables. [Bound with:] A Brief Concordance or Table to the Bible of the Last Translation… by Mr John Downames. London: Assignes of Clement Cotton, [n.d.]. [Bound with:] The Booke of Psalmes. [N.p; n.d. but London: Christopher Barker]. 4to (210 x 152mm.) (Old Testament lacking the first general title, slight loss to Z8 (OT) and H5 (Apocrypha), some shaving to 'Concordance' and to entire headline of 'Book of Common Prayer', blank last leaf of OT (Qq8) with hand-written family history, minor paper repairs, blank leaf to 'Common Prayer' laid-in, browning and minor soiling, endpapers replaced). 17th century calf, gilt title to spine (rebacked, endpapers replaced). BIBLE, In Latin. [Biblia ad vetustissima exemplaria nunc recens castigata]. Venice: Altobellus Salicatius for heirs of Nicolai Beuilacquae, 1574. 4to signed in 8s (211 x 148mm.) Several hundred woodcuts within text, historiated initials, head and tail-pieces. (Lacking title, preliminary and rear blanks, 2pp. of initial text [i + ii], lower margins stained throughout, especially Aaaa to rear, damp-stain from A to M4, some insect damage to upper margins). 17th century calf (spine lacking).
