ARROWSMITH, John. The London Atlas of Universal Geography, exhibiting the Physical & Political Divisions of the Various Countries of the World. London: 1842[-1849]. Folio (550 x 343mm.) Engraved throughout, title, contents leaf and 67 double-page engraved maps, all hand-coloured in outline, all with finger tabs to fore-edge, maps listed and numbered 1-50 and dated 1842 then an additional 17 unnumbered and unlisted maps with some later dates to 1849, extra-illustrated with an outline map of Europe published by George Phillip & Son. (Tabs dust-soiled, a few minor small tears near tabs, minor light browning or soiling, title soiled and with minor tears, a few repaired with tape, contents with small tears and reinforced along fore-edge, extra map with repaired tear.) Contemporary half-morocco, morocco label to upper cover with title in gilt (rebacked, extremities somewhat rubbed and scuffed). Note: this atlas was originally published in 1834, with this new edition appearing in 1842. This copy is enhanced by an additional 17 Arrowsmith maps as follows: 'Sketch of the Acquisitions of Russia', 1842; 'Ionian Islands and Malta', 1844; 'West Coast of Africa', 1843; 'The River Niger', 1843; 'Eastern Frontier of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope', 1848; 'Asia Minor', 1842; 'The Caspian Sea, Khivah, and the surrounding country', 1841; 'The Punjab', 1849; 'Australia' (2 sheets), 1848; 'The Maritime Portion of South Australia', 1840; 'New Zealand', 1844; 'Texas', 8th June 1843; 'Jamaica', 1848; 'The Leeward Islands', 1842; 'The Windward Islands', 1842; 'British Guiana', 1842. The map of Texas is particularly important, Martin and Martin in 'Maps of Texas and the Southwest' state that it is 'probably the first to show the full extent of Texas's claim to the region of the upper Rio Grande, an area included within Texas's boundaries until the Compromise of 1850... [and] the best information on Texas geography available in Europe'. There are four known issues of the Texas map with varying dates from 1841 to 1843 and one later issue dated 1858.

AFRICA. - T.I. DUN. From Cairo to Siwa, Across the Libyan Desert With Armoured Cars. Cairo: E. & R. Schindler, 1933. Limited, first edition, this being one of 750 copies, 4to (328 x 249mm.) Folding map, 2 tipped-in colour plates, numerous illustrations including wood-cuts from students at the Cairo School of Fine Art, a hieroglyphic bookplate (as issued) to front pastedown. (Surface wear to the plates, moderate spotting, a gift inscription to the front-free endpaper.) Original pictorial cloth-backed boards (wear to spine ends). Note: this is an account of a trip across the Libyan desert and Siwa Oasis in 1932 by the major of the Xllth Royal Lancers, undertaken in an armoured Rolls-Royce car. - And a quantity of volumes relating to the Sahara, Africa, and the Middle East (including a signed copy of Gilbert Watson's 'The Voice of the South', 1905, 8vo) (a quantity).

[BURKE, Edmund]. The Annual Register, or, A View of the History, Politics and Literature. London: 1787-1813. 53 vols., mixed editions, 8vo (210 x 129mm.) 4 folding maps to the rear of 1763 by Thomas Kitchin showing North America, France, India and Germany. (Occasional spotting, browning.) 20th century cloth with black morocco lettering pieces to the spines. Note: a run of the Annual Register for the years 1758-1812, lacking the volume for 1775. Containing a wealth of material relating to European and international politics and culture. Volume for 1776 has the 9pp. declaration of the American Independence. It also contains the first publication in part of Adam Smith's 'Wealth of Nations'. The 1787 edition has an early printing of the United States constitution. - And with a 'General Index' volume, 1826. Provenance: West Sussex Public Library (labels to pastedowns) (54).
