(Spotting to front and rear leaves, first gathering of volume 1 loosening, bookplates to front pastedowns.) Contemporary calf with black morocco lettering pieces to the spines (crudely rebacked, rubbing). Note: this was the last edition self-published by Bewick. [BAYARDI, Ottavio Antonio (editor). Le Antichita di Ercolano. N.p. but Naples: Regia Tampera, n.d. but 1767]. Vol. 5 only (of 8), folio, (466 x 346mm.) Numerous engraved plates of antiquities, engraved initials and ornaments. (Lacking title and frontispiece, preliminaries loose, spotting to margins.) Original calf (spine lacking, boards detached). Note: scarce. The first printing of these volumes only ran to 1000 copies and was never sold, only given to chosen recipients. It was later translated into English with the title 'The Antiquities of Herculaneum Exposed'. In its entirety this work proved influential to the rise of neo-classicism, providing artists with Hellenic motifs. The first volume was concerned with paintings, this volume with bronze busts.

(Toning to margins, spotting to front free endpaper and fore-edge.) Original cloth-backed boards with onlaid armorial plate to upper cover (rubbing to extremities, upper joint loosening). Note: an auction sale that took place over nineteen days and the first day of which involved the selling off of 1400 acres, including the village of Dadford.

Title with engraved vignette, 16 engraved plates, some folding and double-paged. (Moderate spotting.)
