Varlin Edition, [n.d. but circa 1933.] Caricatures by 'Varlin' (Willy Guggenheim), captioned in Yiddish, English and German and some in French, too. (Browning, 1 loose leaf, a central crease throughout.) Colour card wrappers (corner crease, small tears, chipping). Note: published just as Hitler came to power, these cartoons are an ominous warning about Nazi intentions.

Limited edition, this being number 346 of 500 copies signed by five grand-daughters of Charles Dickens, 4to (239 x 174mm.) 12 colour plates and numerous illustrations. (Dickens's centenary stamp to the front pastedown, spotting to half-title and title.) Original green cloth with pictorial gilt to upper cover, g.e. (minor marks to both covers, bumped to extremities). Note: scarce.

BEMELMANS, Ludwig. Madeline. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1939. First edition, first impression, 4to (303 x 222mm.) Illustrations and story by Bemelmans. (Mild toning, faint corner creaser to one leaf.) Pictorial boards (bumped to spine ends), dust-jacket (minor loss to spine ends, slight chipping, minor loss to rear panel). Note: has the '1939' date on the title and on copyright page and with the $2.00 price to the inner flap of dust-jacket. This was Bemelman's first 'Madeline' book and the most beloved. He published the second one of the series in 1953.
