(Occasional finger-mark to plates, chipping to margins.) Original green cloth, gilt titles to upper cover (worn, loss to spine, most plates now loosely inserted). OXFORD. - David LOGGAN. Oxonia Illustrata, sive Omnium Celeberrimae istius Universitatis Collegiorum Aularum. Oxford: E Theatro Sheldoniano, 1675. Folio (430 x 287mm.) Engraved decorative title, 3 engraved plates of text, index of plates, 40 double-page engraved plates, including the treble-page plate of 'Christ's College'. (Some marginal paper repairs, spotting and damp-staining to margins throughout, mostly affecting plate captions, 'Oriel College' most affected.) Contemporary red morocco, two gilt rectangles with foliate borders, six raised bands to spine with gilt lettering to the second compartment, foliate design repeating to the rest (neatly rebacked, rubbing to extremities, endpapers and front and rear blanks replaced). Provenance: Frederic Morrell (bookplate to the front pastedown); Joyce Cary, novelist (bookplate to the front pastedown).

ITALY. - James MERIGOT. A Select Collection of Views and ruins in Rome and Its Vicinity, recently executed from drawings made upon the spot. London: Messrs. Robinsons et al., [n.d. but plates dated 1797-1799.] Folio (357 x 259mm.) 62 hand-coloured aquatint plates with titles, text in French and English. (Mild toning, very minor, occasional spotting.) 19th century morocco-backed boards (rubbing to extremities). Provenance: Joyce Cary, novelist (bookplate to front pastedown).

POETRY. A Book of English Sonnets. London: S. Wellwood, 1906. Limited edition of 535 copies, 8vo (184 x 139mm.) (Occasional spotting, and finger-marks.) Original vellum, decorative corner-pieces in gilt to the upper cover (minor soiling and curling to the vellum). Note: contains sonnets by the major English poets, but also works by minor poets of the Edwardian era, e.g. Mark-Andre Raffalovich, John Addington Symonds and Robert Buchanan. Provenance: Reginald L. First edition, 8vo (163 x 119mm.) 1 wood-engraved plate by Edward Burne-Jones, 1p. of publisher's advertisements. (Missing fly-leaf, mild toning.) Contemporary burgundy cloth with paper label onlaid to spine (some loss to paper title, lightly bumped). Original green cloth with double fillet gilt borders, floral stem in gilt to spine. Provenance: R.L. BETJEMAN, John. Collected Poems. London: John Murray, 1958. Signed by the author, 8vo (184 x 100mm.) (Mild toning.) Original brown cloth (lightly bumped). Note: inscribed to front free endpaper 'Inscribed for Jamie, colleague, and [sic] of Seeley Services & Co, Col. Shipton of Ward Lock and Major Murray of Albemarle St, with the good wishes and admiration of the elderly author of this book who subscribes himself Iain MacBetje (John Betjeman), 1970'. This rather florid inscription was written by Betjeman in pencil and, presumably, the recipient 'Jamie' was a publishing acquaintance, or lunching friend, or both.

Colour frontispiece and 7 black and white gravure plates by Kemp-Welch with captioned tissue-guards, decorative endpapers and ornaments by Arthur Rackham. (Light spotting to rear leaves.) Original vellum with pictorial gilt to upper cover and spine (minor soiling to lower cover). Note: an early example of Rackham's work.

BRICKHILL, Paul. Reach for the Sky, The Story of Douglas Bader. London: Collins, 1954. Signed by Douglas Bader, 8vo (207 x 133mm.) Illustrations. (Occasional minor spotting and fingermarks.) Original cloth, dust-jacket (torn folds, rubbed and slightly discoloured). Provenance: 'H.W.' (presentation inscription signed by Bader 'To HW from Douglas 15/3/54').

AUSTIN, Alfred. The Garden that I Love. London: Macmillan and Co., 1894. First edition, signed and inscribed by Alfred Austin, 8vo (206 x 131mm.) Numerous illustrations. (Browning). Original green cloth, gilt shrubbery to upper cover (sunning to spine). Note: Alfred Austin was appointed poet laureate in 1896 after the death of Tennyson. He is now better known for his works on nature. Provenance: Robert Pepys Cockerill (gift inscribed on flyleaf).

GILL, Eric. Welfare Handbook No. 7, Dress - Being an Essay in Masculine Vanity and an Exposure of the Unchristian Apparel favoured by Females. Ditchling, Sussex: S. Dominic's Press, 1921. 4to (143 x 106mm.) 4 wood-engraved illustrations by Gill. Original paper wrapper (slight browning). Note: a curious essay suggesting that vanity is the proper preserve of men because it is then a reflection of the beauty of the world rather than an act of personal display. - And one more volume relating to wood-engravings (Robert Harling's 'Engravings by Eric Ravilious', 1947, 8vo).
