(Browning, spotting to margins, lacking plate no. 22.) Near contemporary red half morocco over buckram boards (rubbing to extremities, surface loss). Provenance: John Peter Worthington (name inscribed to title-page). - And two further illustrated volumes (including 'Tombleson's Views of the Rhine', 1832, 8vo) (3).

Limited edition, this being number 490 of 750 copies signed by Arthur Rackham, 4to (291 x 219mm.) 40 tipped-in colour plates by Arthur Rackham with captioned tissue-guards. (Two of the tissue-guards with creasing, toning.) Original vellum with pictorial gilt and lettering to upper cover and spine, t.e.g. (pitting to covers with some fading to the gilt, lacking silk ties).

ETCHING. - Williams and NORGATE (publisher). The Etcher… Examples of the Original Etched Work of Modern Artists. London: Williams and Norgate, 1879-80. Vol. 1 and 2 (only) in 1 vol. Folio (376 x 266mm.) 54 engraved etchings on 53 leaves by artist including C.P Slocombe, W.H. Urwick, W.J. Cooper, J.M. Youngman and Birket Foster with 'The Etcher Notes' for Jan-Dec 1880 to rear. (Browning, light to moderate spotting to plates, loose leaves.) Original red half morocco over marbled paper covered boards (worn). Note: five volumes of this work were eventually published.

(Faint mark to front-free endpaper.) Original blue cloth (lightly bumped spine ends, slight fading to extremities), dust-jacket (price-clipped, some fading). Provenance: 'David' (gift inscribed to on the front-free endpaper). - And five further volumes in the Paddington Bear series (including a first printing of 'Paddington Marches On', 1964, 8vo) (6).

(Toning to margins, name inscribed to front-free endpaper.) Original cream cloth (some spotting to extremities), dust-jacket (slight chipping to extremities). - And a further thirteen illustrated volumes, including works by Fougasse, Sasek and others (including Reginald Arkell and Lewis Baumer's 'Winter Sportings', 1929, 8vo) (14).

AUGUSTUS JOHN. - Poetry London X… edited by Tambimuttu. London: Nicholson & Watson, Editions PL, 1944. First edition, with a hand-written poem by Augustus John on the half-title, 8vo (255 x 174mm.) Drawings by Mervyn Peake, colour plates by Gerald Wilde. (Toning.) Original beige cloth, gilt lettering to spine (bumped to spine ends), dust-jacket designed by Gerald Wilde (some loss to spine ends). Note: 'The Antiquary', a poem by Augustus John, is hand-written on the half-title and dated December, 1944, the date of publication of this book. The poem is also reproduced in facsimile on p.77. Although John would live another sixteen years the poem has a mournful sense of mortality that is relived only by the thought of the 'antiquary' who might read the poem and bring his voice, momentarily, back to life. 'The fond antiquary may disengage/The secret written on a faded Page/And hear again the speech of those who lay/Together in a cabinet of Clay'.

COWARD, Noel. The Noel Coward Song Book. London: Michael Joseph, 1953. First edition, signed by the author on the title-page, 4to (287 x 216mm.) Frontispiece portrait in colour from a painting by Clemence Dane, coloured and uncoloured illustrations by Gladys Calthrop. (Toning to margins.) Original yellow and grey cloth boards, gilt lettering, dust-jacket (chipped to extremities, tear to spine panel). Note: Includes the 4pp. Memorial Service programme for Coward on the 24th May 1973.

CHILDREN'S BOOKS. - Jennie HARBOUR (illustrator) and Hilda HART. Fairytale Gems. London: Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd., [circa 1920]. (140 x 742mm extended.) 9 colour illustrations to accompany 8 verses. Bound concertina-style with blue silk ribbon ties, housed in original paper-covered card box with mounted illustration to lid (rubbing and browning to box).

London: James Ridgway, 1815. Second edition, 8vo (207 x 117mm.) (Soiling and marginal loss to the title-page, lacking front and rear blanks?) 20th century paper-covered boards, mounted paper label to upper cover (endpapers replaced). - And with four mounted aquatints dated 1816 relating to Waterloo (5).

MAGNANI, Ignazio. Collezione delle Più Celebri Difese Criminali. Bologna, 1825. 2 vols., first edition, 8vo (272 x 201mm.) Portrait frontispiece. (Light spotting, occasional soiling.) Contemporary calf-backed boards, black morocco lettering pieces to the spines (rubbing to extremities). Note: contains the stories of criminal life in late 18th century Bolognia, as remembered by the author, a criminal lawyer. Including the infamous and baffling crimes of Count Girolamo Lucchini, master thief and counterfeiter (2).

BINDING. - Masuccio SALERNITANO. The Novellino… translated into English by W.G. Waters. London: Lawrence and Bullen, 1895. 2 vols. Limited edition, this being number 518 of 1000 copies, 4to (278 x 180mm.) Illustrations, slight risqué, by E.R. Hughes with tissue-guards. (Occasional light spotting to front and rear leaves, toning to margins.) Near contemporary full blue morocco by Rivière, gilt borders, repeating gilt design to spine compartments, triple gilt border turn-ins, e.g. (slight fading to spines). Note: the story of Mariotto and Ganozza is thought to be the original source of Romeo and Juliet.

CRICKET. - P.F. WARNER (editor). Imperial Cricket. London: London & Counties Press Association Ltd., 1912. Limited de Luxe edition, this being number 64 of 100 copies signed by the editor, 4to (308 x 244mm.) Photogravure frontispiece of George V, numerous coloured and uncoloured plates. (Toning, spotting verso of frontispiece, and moderately throughout small corner creases to some leaves.) Original vellum, decorative gilt and lettering to upper cover and spine, e.g. (minor soiling).

DESIGN. - Henri GRAVE. Nouveau Traité de Serrurerie Artistique Pour les Travaux en Remplissage Antiques et Modernes. [Paris: H. Grave, 1873.] Lithographed title, 63 lithographed plates with designs in art-nouveau style, captioned with text in French. (Mostly light spotting, lacking rear blank.) Contemporary black morocco-backed cloth covers (rubbing to all extremities). Note: Henri Grave, locksmith, published these designs for railings, fences, locks, gates and brackets based on pieces 'dans les principals villes de France, tells que Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nantes, Toulouse etc.'

Robinson, 1788. Fourth edition, 4to (278 x 206mm.) Folding map of the world frontispiece, engraved plate of an armillary sphere and 23 engraved folding maps with contemporary hand-colouring. (Creasing to maps, 1 map torn in two pieces, 6 maps with shorter tears, heavy insect damage to lower margin of p.440-p720, with some loss to text and damage to lower margins of 3 maps.) Contemporary calf, red morocco lettering to the spine with repeating gilt (rubbing to extremities).
