TRAVEL. - George SANDYS. A Relation of a Journey begin in An. Dom: 1610. Foure Bookes Containing a Description of the Turkish Empire of Egypt, of the Holy Land, of the Remote Parts of Italy. London: [by Thomas Cotes] for Andrew Crooke, 1637. Fourth edition, folio signed in 6s. (271 x 180mm.) Engraved architectural title, 45 engraved illustrations in the text. (Lacking 12 leaves to rear, all after Bb5, with later ('yellow') hand-colouring to title and to many of the illustrations, small hole to title, lacking map and panorama, browning, minor soiling.) Late 18th century half calf, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (rubbing). Provenance: James Maitland Shairp (name inscribed to first text leaf); Andrew Agnew of Lochnaw (armorial bookplate to front pastedown). [Blackmer 1484]. - And a further travel- related volume (the second edition of W.D. Fellowes's 'A Visit to the Monastery of La Trappe in 1817' with all twelve of the hand-coloured plates, 1818, 8vo) (2).

[STEVENSON, Robert Louis.] The Trial of James Stewart in Aucharn in Duror of Appin, for the murder of Colin Campbell of Glenure. Edinburgh: for G. Hamilton and J. Balfour, 1753. First edition, small 4to (190 x 118mm.) Folding map, appendix. (Map bound at rear with tape repairs to verso, lacking leaf Gg5, ink stain to N2, marginal tears to Gg2 and Nn2, a later tipped-in front blank, browning, minor soiling.) Contemporary calf, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (rubbing to extremities). Note: James Stewart was hung while proclaiming his innocence. Robert Louis Stevenson used a fictionalised account of the murder in his novel 'Kidnapped'. The case has failed to rest. As recently as 2008 there were attempts to re-open the investigation and prove James Stewart's innocence. Provenance: Society of Procurators, Perth (bookplate to front pastedown).

Limited edition, being number 92 of 250 copies signed by the editor, 4to (234 x 178mm.) 54 engraved copper plates with tissue-guards, numerous illustrations in the text, in 2 parts, folding facsimile of a letter from Bewick. (Toning.) Original black half morocco over green morocco covered boards bound by Andrew Reid, gilt titling to spine, t.e.g. (light rubbing to extremities). Provenance: [?] Training College (small stamp to margin of p.29). - And a further six volumes relating to Bewick (including James Thomson's 'The Seasons…embellished with Engravings on Wood by Bewick from Thurston's Designs', 1805, 4to, and the Emerson Charnley edition of Thomas and John Bewick's 'Select Fables', 1820, 8vo) (7).

Black letter, double column, woodcut initials and ornaments, both general and NT title with woodcut heart-shaped centre and decorative borders, NT title dated 1613, includes Apocrypha and John Speed's 'Genealogies'. (Without the map of Cannan, damp-staining to the 'Genealogies', text wholly cracked at A7, loss to text at H5 and Qqq8, marginal loss with text unaffected to several leaves, minor soiling throughout, finger-marks.)
