[CAMPBELL, Colen. Vitruvius Britannicus, or the British Architect, containing the Plan, Elevations and Sections of the Regular Buildings both Publick and Private in Great Britain. London: circa 1717-1731.] Folio (453 x 288mm.) 101 loose engraved architectural plates, including 25 double-paged, after plans by Campbell, Inigo Jones, Hawksmoor, Rocque and others, three engraved title-pages, two of which are the undated additional titles, but including the third volume title-page in red and black, calligraphic dedication to King George, 9pp. and 10pp. text leaves for 'Explanation of the Plates'. (Toning, browning and minor spotting to margins.) Disbound. Note: the plates all come from volumes 1-3. There are 42 from volume 1, 41 from volume 2 and 18 from volume 3. The plates from the first two volumes might be from later editions, rather than the first edition of 1717. The plates from volume 3 are from the 1731 edition, which came out six years after the first edition. Provenance: the property of Donald Church.

HERBAL. - Thomas VICARY. The Englishman's Treasure, With the True Anatomie of Mans Body… whereunto are annexed many Secrets appertaining to Chyrurgerie, with divers excellent approved Remedies for all Captaines and Souldiers, that travel either by Water or Land. London: by B. Alsop, and Thomas Favvcet, 1641. 4to (175 x 123mm.) Black letter, woodcut frontispiece, decorative and inhabited woodcut initials, and head and tail-pieces. (Leaves T2-T3 replaced in facsimile, paper repairs to two initial blanks, marginal damp-staining Q1-R1 and to margins of rear leaves, closed marginal tear to Kk4, occasional browning, marginal paper repair to last leaf Rr2, ink annotation to fourth blank and last leaf, history of the books repair in ink to rear pastedown.) Mid-20th century brown calf, original calf laid-on to both covers (endpapers replaced). Note: Thomas Vicary was an early English physician, described as 'but a meane practiser in Maidstone… that had gained his knowledge by experience, until the King advanced him for curing his sore leg'. Provenance: William Hoar (name inscribed on first blank); Richard Hoar (name inscribed to fourth blank); Thomas Hoar (gift inscribed to on the fourth blank).

HERBAL. - Nicholas CULPEPER. Pharmacopoeia Londinensis: or the London Dispensatory Further adorned by the Studies and Collections of the Fellows, now living of the said Colledg. London: Peter Cole, 1659. 'Sixt Edition', 8vo (170 x 116mm.) Title with double row of typographic ornament, separate title for 'Key to Galen's Method of Physick' dated 1658, also with double row of typographic ornament, 'Table of Compounds' and 'Table of Diseases' to rear, erratic pagination. (Lacking half-title, trimming to headlines with no loss, spotting to Gg6-Gg7, minor chipping to leaf margins, several ownership claims in late 17th century manuscript hand, rear blank with paper repair.) Contemporary calf (rebacked and corners repaired, endpapers replaced). Provenance: James Clarke (name ink inscribed to initial blank, and within text).

HERBAL. - James NEWTON. A Compleat Herbal… containing the Prints and the English Names of Several Thousand Trees, Plants, Shrubs, Flowers, Exotics, &c. London: E. Cave, 1752. First edition, 8vo (186 x 111mm.) Engraved portrait frontispiece of J. Newton, 175 engraved plates, 7pp. 'Index' to rear. (Browning to title, marginal paper repair to plate 145.) Near contemporary calf, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (some loss to the lettering piece, light rubbing). Note: Newton was a botanist and physician, but he also ran an asylum for the mentally ill in London. He began his herbal in 1680 but died before it was completed and it was published posthumously by his grandson. Provenance: Antonia Hengitt (name inscribed to front pastedown); Francis Hengitt (name inscribed to front pastedown); E.R. Massy (pencil name inscribed to initial blank).

Third edition, folio signed in 6s (331 x 214mm.) Engraved architectural title by J. Payne, numerous botanical woodcut illustrations throughout, woodcut initials, 'Appendix' to rear, indices for both Latin and English terms, 'The Table of Vertues' to rear and last leaf 'An Advertisement to the Readers' being Bbbbbbb5. (Light spotting and browning throughout, occasional minor soiling, part of p.491 replaced in facsimile, title laid-down, marginal repairs to dedication leaf and 'An advertisement to the Reader' with some loss of text to latter, blanks replaced.) 18th century reversed calf, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (rebacked in reversed calf, corners repaired, staining and scuffing to covers). Provenance: George Gill (ink name rear pastedown); S.L. Nussey, Potternewton Hall (name-plate to the front pastedown).

First edition, large paper copy, folio (448 x 281mm.) Engraved allegorical frontispiece and 75 engraved plates all hand-coloured in a contemporary hand, title in red and black, engraved title vignette and dedication with engraved coat-of-arms also hand-coloured, double-column text, 3pp. index to rear. (Light spotting to title-page, browning and intermittent spotting, plate 1 and 39 with corner losses, first text leaves with heavier spotting.) Contemporary calf with foliate gilt to spine compartments (lacking lettering piece, fading to gilt, rubbing to extremities, joints splitting). Provenance: Charles Butler Clough (armorial bookplate to the front pastedown).

[TYPESCRIPT.] - Havelock ELLIS. Studies in the Psychology of Sex. [N.p.: n.d. but circa 1908.] Vol. 6, 'Sex in Relation to Society', 279pp., original typed manuscript, loose leaf (257 x 203mm.). Comprising the typed leaves of chapters I, 2, 4 and 5 of volume 6 of 'Studies in the Psychology of Sex', with ink annotations and two hand-written leaves, titles in manuscript hand to chapters 1 and 2. (Browning, chipping and minor creasing to margins, large tear to first two leaves of chapter 1.) Pin-bound to left corner. - And includes seven published booklets by Havelock Ellis, four of which are signed by him ('The Symbolism of Dreams', 1910, 8vo, 'Variation in Man and Woman', 1903, 8vo, 'Mescal: A Study of a Divine Plant', 1902, 8vo and 'Studies in the Psychology of Sex, Being the First Section of Volume Three', 1903, 8vo, and a further three unsigned booklets: two copies of 'The Sexual Impulse in Women', 1902, and 'The Conquest of the Venereal Diseases', 1908, 8vo). Also includes a 2pp. a.l.s. from Havelock Ellis to architect Maurice Bingham Adams. Note: Ellis and Adams were both early members of the socialist 'Fellowship of the New Life', a precursor to the Fabian Society. Ellis mentions the fellowship in the context of helping the husband of novelist Olive Schreiner write a biography of her.
