Coins, Banknotes and Medallions

A scarce Iron Age Southern Gaul (Massalia) cast copper-alloy/bronze unit, circa 3rd-2nd century BC, die-struck on a cast potin-like flan with remnants of casting sprue, obverse with laureate head of Apollo facing left (interestingly double struck) within a beaded line border, reverse with bull butting right, standing on exergual line, legend 'MA' above, diameter 17mm, thickness 4mm, weight 5.42g (good-extremely fine for type with good patina, some irregularity to flan and some cast bubbles as expected for type, but a rare offering, perhaps one of the best examples found, with approximately twenty recorded in the UK). Note: probably a Gaulish import, rather than a British cast derivative, such as the Thurrock or Kentish type castings. Found in West Sussex and recorded on the finds.org database: SUSS-E9C571, ABC 115.

A scarce John short-cross penny 1199-1216, class 5b2, moneyer 'Nicole on Lone', King's Lynn Mint (good, patchy patina, some surface degradation, some splitting to flan but stable, a rare moneyer for this mint).

A scarce Iron Age Britain/Gaul copper-alloy/bronze unit, boar-cock type, obverse with crescent torc-like design, possibly a stylized boar, reverse with standing cock with prominent tail and legs (overall quite porous surface but general design features prominent, a rare offering). Note: found in West Sussex and recorded on the find.org database: SUSS-BF915C.

A collection of late 17th, 18th and early 19th century milled silver coinage, including a George III Bull Head shilling 1819, a George IV shilling1825 and a William IV sixpence 1834.

A collection of Roman copper-alloy coinage, including a Roman Empire Constantius II centenionalis 324-337 AD, reverse with fallen horseman, Cyzicus Mint, a Constantius II AE3 337-361 AD, reverse with soldiers and two standards, and a further two Constantius II AE3 coins 337-361 AD, reverses detailed 'VOT XX MVLT XXX' within wreaths.

A collection of 14th-17th century European copper-alloy jettons, including an Edward I type, obverse with Edward standing under canopy, a group of four Edward I cross-pellets and symbols types, one with portrait bust of Edward, a France fleur-de-lis in shield type and a German States brass counter depicting Louis XIV.

A 19th century gilt brass commemorative counter box by Thomason & Jones, the body detailed 'British Victories in the Peninsula', the lid with portrait bust of 'Marquis of Wellington', the base detailed 'First Battle, Portugal, Aug.17.1808 Last Battle, France, Ap.10.1814', height 3.6cm, containing twenty-five gilt brass medalets, each with winged Victory and various battles named.

A small collection of European and world coinage, including a George III shilling 1787 with semée of hearts, Sp 3746 (extremely fine, toned), a Spain Charles III one real 1781, a France Louis XV one-fifth ecu 1759 and a Dutch Republic Matthias six stuivers 1611-1619.

A 19th century copper-alloy 'Billy and Charley' Shadwell Dock forgery of a pilgrim's medallion, one side detailed with two knights in combat, the other with a religious figure holding two large keys, spuriously dated '1001', with borders of medieval style text. Note: William 'Billy' Smith and Charles 'Charley' Eaton produced and sold many notorious forgeries of medieval pilgrims' medals between 1857 and 1870.

A small collection of tokens, medallions and other paranumismatic items, including a late 19th century auctioneer's token, obverse detailed with a sheep and 'Hagley Sale', reverse detailed 'Refreshments 3d', two early 19th century gilt metal tokens/counters, dated 1801, celebrating 'Preliminaries of Peace between Great Britain and France', a small group of George III period coin and trade weights, and two George V and Queen Mary silver commemorative medallions celebrating their 1911 coronation and 1935 jubilee, each diameter 30mm.

A scarce Isle of Man James Stanley penny 1709, first cast issue, obverse with the Stanley family crest of eagle over a child in a wicker basket above the cap of maintenance, dated below, with legend 'Sans Changer', reverse with triskeles, weight 6.8g (overall good for issue, old patina but patchy environmental marks, though stable).
