An interesting early 19th century 38-bore percussion overcoat pistol with octagonal barrel with integral swing-over ramrod, barrel length 9cm, nickel locks, later engraved 'C. Chaplin. Esq. Blankney' and 'Joe Manton, Bond St. London' with foliate motifs, scrolling nickel trigger guard, engraved with foliate motifs, and finely chequered grip with banded nickel butt and inset nickel tablet, engraved with a flower. Note: Charles Chaplin II (1786-1859) was one of a family line of prominent landowners and Members of Parliament, who were squires of the Blankney Estate in Lincolnshire from the late 1700s to the early 1920s. He served as MP for Lincolnshire from 1809-1832 and was noted for his countryside pursuits, his contribution to local infrastructure and his progressing of the Fordingham drainage bill.
