LOT 1149
An early 20th century lacquered brass circular cased ship's clock timepiece, formerly from the steam yacht 'Iolanda', the fusee movement with platform escapement and numbered '20860', the 5¼-inch silvered dial with black Roman hour numerals, slow/fast indicator and subsidiary seconds and detailed 'Iolanda' above 'Lennie Edinburgh', the case with hinged bevelled glass front, case diameter 17cm, on a wooden backplate, with winding key and paperwork relating to the S.Y. Iolanda. Note: the steam yacht Iolanda was built in 1908 at Leith for the American railroad and shipping financier (and yachting fanatic) Morton F. Plant. Described as 'probably the finest yacht in the world', the Iolanda was listed in 1913 as the third largest in private ownership, behind only that of the Vanderbilts and Gordon Bennett of The New York Times. The yacht later served in two world wars under the commission of the Royal Navy.
