LOT 1216
A George III mahogany naval interest longcase clock, the eight day movement striking on a bell, the 12-inch silvered breakarch dial inscribed 'The Royal George' to the arch above a rocking automaton of the Royal Navy warship, the chapter ring with black Roman hour numerals and outer Arabic minutes, framing subsidiary seconds and date aperture, and inscribed 'Thos Wynn London', the hood with moulded arch pediment above a glazed door and fluted cut corner columns, the trunk with arched door and fluted cut corner columns, on a panelled base and bracket feet, height 224cm, with pendulum, two brass cased weights, case key and winder. Note: Thomas Wynn(e) is a recorded London clockmaker working circa 1765-1770. The HMS Royal George was a Royal Navy 100-gun first rate ship of the line. At the time of her launch on February 18th 1756, she was the largest warship in the world. The ship saw service during the Seven Years' War, including the raid on Rochefort in 1757 and the Battle of Quiberon Bay in 1759, the American Revolutionary War in 1777 and the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1780. The Royal George sank on 20th August 1782 whilst anchored at Spithead off Portsmouth. The ship was intentionally rolled for maintenance but became unstable and out of control, took on water and sank. More than 800 people died, making it one of the most deadly maritime disasters in British territorial waters.
