A Thai silver gilt and niello tea or water pot and cover, mid-19th century, of cylindrical form with split hinged loop handle and lotus knop to cover, the scroll spout with gilt stopper and suspension chain, the exterior finely worked with dense rosemallow flower decoration (lai dok phuttan), raised on four reeded tapering feet, weight 493.8g, height 20cm (repair to edge of base panel). Note: 19th century Thai niello ware is highly regarded and has a Thai royal association, with pieces in the Royal Collections and given as state gifts by Thai royalty. A similar example was gifted to the United States of America in 1856 from Siam's King Mongkut, Rama IV, now held in the Smithsonian as part of a large selection of niello ware produced by Siamese goldsmiths and silversmiths. This piece is illustrated in 'Thai Silver and Nielloware' by Paul Bromberg, Page 70.
