A George III 'jewelled' gilt bronze musical automaton table clock base, circa 1770-1780, in the manner of James Cox, containing a spring driven chain fusee carillon mechanism, playing six airs on eight bells and thirteen hammers (five bells with double strike), all four sides with automaton parade scenes depicting boats in an estuary, figures around a village water pump, windmill and farmers in a rural landscape and a fiddler, children and dog, each framed with red and colourless paste set bordered glazed panels, cornered with cast foliate scroll supports and feet further embellished with colourless pastes, the cover with later leather and gilt bronze foliate mounts, the underside of cover engraved 'No 9', length 29cm, originally forming the lower section of an important clock, made for the Eastern market (parts of the jewelling are later replacements, some missing and one side missing glass and jewelled frame).
