An early 19th century Scottish mahogany longcase clock with eight day movement striking on a bell, the 14-inch circular painted dial with Roman hours, outer Arabic minutes, subsidiary seconds and date dials, inscribed 'Wm Dobbie Falkirk', the hood with fretwork surmount and brass ball finials above a moulded arch pediment and circular glazed door, the trunk with line inlaid rectangular door flanked by spiral reeded corner columns, on a line inlaid plain base and bracket feet, height 230cm, the pendulum with floral decorated bob and two weights. Note: William Dobbie III is a recorded and renowned Scottish clockmaker working 'Opposite the Steeple' on the high street in Falkirk. He was born in 1796 into a family of clockmakers. He later became watchmaker, jeweller and clockmaker to Queen Victoria and had his work displayed in the 1851 Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace.
