KIPLING FAMILY COLLECTION. - Stephen CRANE. Wounds in the Rain. London: Methuen & Co., 1900. First UK edition, inscribed by Cora Crane to Rudyard Kipling, 8vo (191 x 121mm.) (Browning to pastedowns, light spotting to preliminaries.) Original red cloth, gilt lettering to upper cover and spine (fading to spine, soiling to margins). Note: the inscription reads 'To Rudyard Kipling Esq., Compliments of Cora Crane'. Crane was an admirer of Kipling's work and it's possible they met when Kipling lived in America. However, the Crane's also lived in Oxted, England, when Stephen was sent to Europe on assignments as war correspondent. Cora accompanied him and, writing under the name 'Imogene Carter' is now considered to be the first female war correspondent. They were befriended by members of the Fabian society, as well as H.G. Wells and Joseph Conrad. Stephen died of tuberculosis at a sanatorium in Germany, aged twenty-eight. Provenance: Rudyard Kipling (bookplate to front pastedown). - And a collection of forty-one further volumes with an association to the Kipling and the Macdonald family (including 'A Pinchbeck Goddess', 1897, 8vo, inscribed by Alice M. Fleming ['Trix' Kipling, Rudyard's sister] and with the ownership name of 'Alice Kipling', the author's mother); and 'Rewards and Fairies', 1910, 8vo, with an ownership inscription of 'Trix Fleming'; and Angela Thirkell's 'The Brandons', 1939, 8vo, inscribed by Thirkell to her 'Darling Aunt Trix' [Thirkell was a cousin of Rudyard and 'Trix'], with a framed photograph of Thirkell as a child; and books with ownership inscriptions of Helen, Edith, Margaret and Florence Macdonald, and volumes owned and inscribed by Kipling's cousin, Julius F. Macdonald, and several volumes about the family.

RUDYARD KIPLING. - Ian HAMILTON. Listening for the Drums. London: Faber and Faber, 1944. First edition, with an a.l.s. to Alice 'Trix' Kipling, 8vo (218 x 126mm.) Portrait frontispiece, numerous photographic illustrations. (Toning.) Original red cloth, gilt lettering to spine (slight fading to spine). Note: Ian Hamilton and 'Trix', Rudyard's younger sister, were dancing partners in Simla and Calcutta in 1886-87, and later. There remained an ongoing intimacy between the two and Hamilton refers to her in the book itself. The 14 line letter reads, in part: 'Dearest Trix, in posting you this copy of 'Listening for the Drums' my heart tells me that I am returning to my dancing partner of long ago a bit of the precious little self. There are all sorts of things scattered through these reminiscences - mostly rubbish, but the titbits, the best bits, the bits that will be quoted, come from you and what you told me about Ruddy and his great dividing line between verses and poetry. I should love to see you again...'. Provenance: Alice Kipling (inscribed to by the author verso the title-page).

Original blue cloth, gilt medallion to upper cover, gilt lettering to the spine, t.e.g. Provenance: Alice 'Trix' Fleming, writer and sister of Rudyard Kipling (ink inscribed to the front-free endpaper). At the age of twenty-one, 'Trix' married Colonel John Fleming and the book is inscribed 'Trix Fleming, 1932'.

KIPLING, Rudyard. If - . London: Macmillan and Co. Limited, 1914. Second separate English edition, (163 x 130mm.) 4pp. of text, 2pp. advertisements recto and verso of the lower cover. Original card covers (slight toning). Note: first published in 'Rewards and Fairies' in 1910, Kipling's poem had its most significant impact with this edition, published during the first month of the war.

Original blue cloth with pictorial gilt to upper cover and spine, e.g. (lightly bumped spine ends). Provenance: Aylmer G. Original red cloth, medallion embossed to upper cover (bumped to spine ends, some damp-spotting to upper cover), dust-jacket (with loss and paper backing repair, chipping and soiling).

CENTRAL ASIA. - Nikolai PREJEVALSKY. Mongolia, the Tangut Country, and the Solitudes of Northern Tibet, Being a Narrative of Three Years' Travel in Eastern High Asia… translated by E. Delmar Morgan. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1876. 2 vols., first edition, 8vo (221 x 137mm.) Photographic portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard, 12 wood-engraved plates, illustrations within the text. (Toning, lacking map and front and rear blanks.) Later red half morocco over marbled paper boards, gilt lettering to spines, with original cloth covers mounted to front pastedowns, including the original spine tipped-in to volume two (slight fading to spines, endpapers replaced). Note: travelling through areas that were then unknown to the West, Prejevalsky's works were a significant contribution to the exploration of Central and Eastern Asia, including its flora and fauna. Later, there were persistent but finally unsubstantiated rumours that he was the biological father of Josef Stalin (2).
