Briton Rivière - 'Circe and the Friends of Ulysses', oil on canvas, signed and dated 1871 recto, Royal Jubilee Exhibition Manchester label verso, 68.5cm x 130cm, within a gilt inslip. Provenance: John Kynaston Cross, industrialist and Member of Parliament for Bolton, who served as Under Secretary of State for India during William Gladstone's tenure as Prime Minister; in 1887 the work was inherited by his wife, Emily Cross (née Carlton); on November 22nd 1911 the work was sold at Tooth & Tooth (Lot 149) for £385 to the art dealer William Walker Sampson; currently consigned for sale from a local deceased estate. Exhibitions: Royal Academy, London, in 1871; International Exhibition, Philadelphia, in 1876; Royal Jubilee Exhibition, Manchester in 1887.
