Albert Huie – ‘The Baptism’, 20th century woodcut, signed and titled in pencil, 38cm x 27cm, within an ebonized frame. Note: Albert Huie, known as the ‘Father of Jamaican Painting,’ was born on December 31, 1920, in Falmouth, Jamaica. He moved to Kingston in 1936, studying art while working as a poster artist. A scholarship took him to the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in London in 1938. Huie's vibrant paintings depicted Jamaican rural life, landscapes, and portraits, capturing the essence of his homeland. Notable works include ‘Crop Time’ and ‘Counting Lesson.’ He exhibited widely and received the Order of Distinction from the Jamaican government in 1983. Albert Huie passed away on January 31, 2010, leaving a lasting impact on Jamaican and Caribbean art.
