A mid-18th century ebonized bracket clock by William Smith of London, with eight day five pillar twin fusee movement with verge escapement striking hours on a bell, the backplate finely engraved with foliate scrolls, the brass break arch dial with matt centre, mock pendulum and date aperture, framed by a silvered chapter ring with black Roman hours and Arabic minutes, cornered with cast and pierced rococo scroll spandrels, all beneath a silvered strike/silent indicator to the arch inscribed 'Wm Smith, London', the case with inverted bell top and brass carrying handle, above glazed door and sides and pierced fret panels, on a moulded rectangular base and bracket feet, height 52cm, with case key. Note: William Smith is recorded as working, as a clockmaker, in Cheapside, London from 1750 to 1780. Provenance: the underside of wooden seatboard faintly inscribed in old script 'This timepiece belongs to my uncle Tom Mills 1881' and accompanied by a small slip of paper stating that this is the handwriting of Grandpa Mills, father of Mrs M.L. Bowen.
