Note: a fascinating account from a Native Officer of the Madras Lancers of his part in the Diamond Jubilee Procession where he met Queen Victoria and his feelings about the colonial country: 'the only thing both countries have in common is that they are peopled by human beings'.

Note: includes a 2pp. hand-written letter from Edgar Thurston, scholar on the anthropology and ethnology of India, to Rosamund Thompson (née Deane), a relative of the author. Provenance: Rosamund Thompson (name inscribed to title-page).

Original blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine, dust-jacket (closed tear along spine panel, occasional chipping), later black half-morocco clamshell box, gilt lettering to spine. Note: lacks pagination on p.214 and p.294 and the speech from September 1939; the typed paper slip is on Chartwell-headed paper and says 'With Mr. Churchill'c [sic] compliments.' Provenance: Maxwell Steinhardt, lawyer and book collector (bookplate to front pastedown, designed by Rockwell Kent).

Note: the charts are: 'Shewing the Track of the Centurion Round the World', 'A Chart of the Southern Part of South America' and 'A Chart of the Pacific Ocean'. Folding map, 24pp. publisher's advertisements to rear. (Toning, occasional mild spotting.) Original cloth, gilt lettering to spine (fading to spine, rubbing to extremities). Note: scarce. The mutinies of Oude were one of the last actions of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and these contemporary records have diary-like immediacy. Provenance: G.H. Mainwaring (name inscribed to title-page).

Engraved portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard, numerous plates and illustrations in the text. (Spotting to front and rear leaves, toning to margins.) Later full red morocco, gilt borders and lettering to spine, gilt border turn-ins, t.e.g. (rubbing to spine ends). PEAKE, Mervyn. Poems and Drawings. London: Keepsake Press, 1965. First edition, first issue, limited to 150 copies only this one inscribed by Maeve Gilmore, 4to (229 x 146mm.) Illustrations by Peake. (Toning, small finger-mark to one leaf.) Original pictorial card covers (browning and some creasing to margins, stain to upper cover). Note: gift inscribed in ink by Maeve Gilmore, wife of Mervyn Peake. The inscription on the verso of the last leaf reads 'To David, with best wishes from Maeve- Good Friday 1965'. At this time Peake had been in declining health for some time. Provenance: 'Dennis' (inscribed in ink).
