BIBLE, In English. The Holy Bible Contayning the Old and New Testaments: Newly Translated out of the Originall Tongues and with the former Translations diligently compared and revised. London: John Feild [sic], 1660. 12mo (148 x 77mm.) Engraved title by William Vaughan, red ruled, OT only, last leaf T12. (Browning throughout, trimming to numerous headline words, lacking blanks, notes and annotation verso the endpapers, tape reinforcement to hinges.) Contemporary red morocco with fillet borders and volute tooling to covers, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (rubbing to extremities). [Herbert 671.] - And a further six related volumes (including 'Novum Testamentum' in Greek published by R. Norton, 1653, 12mo, a defective copy of John Knox's 'History of the Reformation of the Church of Scotland', 1644, 4to, and a defective variant of the 'Wicked Bible' published by Robert Barker, [1631], 8vo, which contains the 'not' of Exodus XX, verse 14) (7).

BIBLE, In English. The Holy Bible, Containing the Old Testament and the New, Newly Translated out of the Original Tongues and with the former translations diligently compared and revised. Oxford: at the Theatre, to be sold by Peter Parker, 1682. Folio (292 x 210mm.) Title ruled in red and black with engraved Royal Coat-of-arms to General and NT title, includes 'Book of Common Prayer' and Apocrypha, engraved frontispiece of Charles II, with 'The Whole Book of Psalm'. (Numerous loose leaves, text-block cracked, marginal paper repairs, particularly to frontispiece, browning, occasional soiling.) Contemporary red morocco, later red morocco lettering piece to the spine, g.e. (rebacked, tape reinforcement to hinges, endpapers replaced, heavily rubbed and discoloured). Provenance: Henry Streatfeild (ink name to title and bookplate to front pastedown). [Herbert 769 C].

BIBLE, In English. The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments: Translated out of the Original Tongues; and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. London: George Eyre and Andrew Strahan, 1806. 4to (278 x 212mm.) Hand-drawn genealogical history of the Wilberforce family on the preliminaries and rear-endpaper, a folding 3pp. hand-written note by William Wilberforce's son, also called William, tipped-in to the front-free endpaper. (Browning.) Contemporary straight-grain morocco, gilt dentelles within ruled borders, g.e. (rubbing to extremities, marks to lower cover). Note: in the hand-written note William Wilberforce's son writes 'Copy of entries in family Bible commenced in my father's handwriting and continued in my own'. He goes on to describe the genealogical table that is verso the front-free endpaper. The note covers the family from William Wilberforce's [the elder] parents down until the 1870's. In various hands the genealogical table itself dates until a marriage in 1914. Provenance: Margaret Anne Babington (gift inscribed to by 'Mr. Gisborne'; John Garton Sargent (gift inscribed to by his godmother Mrs. Babington). - And a further ten volumes relating to William Wilberforce (including 'Novum Testamentum Syriacè', 1816, 4to' with William Wilberforce's bookplate to the rear pastedown and a gift inscription to him from the editor, Samuel Lee. The lot also includes Wilberforce's 'A Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System of Professed Christians in the Higher and Middle Classes', 1803, 8vo, and also 'The Correspondence of William Wilberforce', 2 vols., 1840, and 'Letters to W. Wilberforce' by Amicus Protestans, 1822, 8vo, and a framed lithograph of Marden Park, the family residence) (11).

THEOLOGY. - John BERRIDGE. A Collection of Divine Songs, Designed chiefly for the Religious Societies of Churchmen in the Neighbourhood of Everton, Bedfordshire. London: 1760, 8vo (166 x 96mm.) (Damp-staining to margins throughout, pp. xv-xxii excised, p.103 torn, soiling, browning, numerous verses with hand-drawn redaction, annotations, three rear leaves excised.) Contemporary calf (rubbed). Note: John Berridge's copy. Soon after this book was published Berridge had the work suppressed. In 1785 he brought out 'Sion's Song' to replace it. In this copy Berridge has made emendations to nearly every page. Provenance: John Berridge, Anglican evangelist and hymnist (name inscribed to front pastedown). - And a further eleven volumes relating to religion (including P. Doddridge's 'The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul', 1792, 8vo, and a defective copy of I. Watkins's 'Scripture History' [n.d. circa 1822], 16mo, and 'The Works of the Rev. John Newton', 1816, 5 vols. [of 6], 8vo) (12).
