(Toning.) Contemporary burgundy morocco covers, gilt lettering to upper covers, g.e. (rubbing to spine ends). Note: Burton was, amongst other talents, an accredited fencing master and in this volume, published after his death, he compares the fencing techniques of different nations.

MANUSCRIPT. [A hand-written list of recipes, cures and potions by Charles Waite, apothecary. N.p: 1859.] 207pp., manuscript, 8vo (177 x 115mm.) Numbered pages in a single legible hand detailing cures, potions and recipes with a 20pp. index at front, several blank leaves to rear. (Browning, minor soiling, rear endpaper loose, pencil and ink annotation to rear leaves.) Original half morocco boards (worn). Note: contains a 'lotion for stiff-dry hair', 'Colombo water- a safe stimulant for a languid appetite', a 'varnish for old books' and instructions for making imitation tortoiseshell.

Contemporary marbled calf, red morocco lettering piece to spine (upper cover detached, held by tape, rubbing). Note: scarce. Provenance: James Comerford (bookplate to front pastedown).

London: by T.P. and W.J. for Matthew Costerden, 1635.] First edition, 4to (201 x 157mm.) In 3 parts, 4 folding engraved maps, engraved initials and ornaments, two rear blanks. (Lacking title and preliminaries before A2, lacking pp. 9-12, occasional soiling and corner creases, Ddd3-Iii3 with marginal insect damage, text slightly affected, Lll 4 with marginal loss, large tear to 1 map along fold, browning.) Contemporary calf (upper cover detached, worn). Note: the maps are of the known world, ie. without Australia and the Americas. Provenance: C. Willner Southam (name inscribed verso the upper cover). Contemporary panelled calf, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (moderate rubbing to extremities, upper cover loosening). Contemporary calf (minor loss to spine ends, contemporary annotation on the pastedowns). Note: Lockyer was a chaplain to and close ally of Oliver Cromwell. Provenance: Elizabeth David (name to front pastedown).

TRAVEL & EXPLORATION. - Charles Colville FRANKLAND. Travels to and From Constantinople in 1827 and 1828. London: Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley, 1830. 2 vols., second edition, 8vo (214 x 124mm.) 16 aquatint plates, including 2 with hand-colouring and several folding, 11 wood-engraved plates, 3 maps and 1 plan. (Occasional browning, toning, short tear to 1 map.) Contemporary half calf over marbled paper-covered boards (tape re-enforcement to hinges, upper cover of volume 1 loosening, rubbing to extremities, burn mark to spine of volume 2). Limited edition, this being number 417 of 500 copies, 4to (263 x 192mm.) 10 tipped-in colour plates by W. Russell Flint with tissue-guards and captioned leaves. (Spotting to 1 leaf, occasional browning.) Cloth-backed paper-covered boards, paper labels mounted to upper cover and spine (browned to edges, rubbing to extremities).

GREENAWAY, Kate (illustrator) and Mrs. Sale BARKER. Kate Greenaway's Birthday Book for Children. London: George Routledge and Sons, [1880.] First edition, signed by Kate Greenaway, 24mo (88 x 89mm.) 12 colour plates, numerous uncoloured illustrations, turquoise endpapers. (Mild toning.) Original beige pictorial cloth, lettering to upper and lower covers (browning). Note: the inscription reads: ['Presented to'] 'Jane Locker, by Kate Greenaway, Rowfant, 25th August 1880'. Jane was the wife of Frederick Locker-Lampson. Kate's involvement with the Locker-Lampson family was greatly beneficial to her career and Frederick introduced her to artistic and literary circles in London. Later, Greenaway replaced the friendship and mentoring of the Locker-Lampsons for the company of John Ruskin. His advice proved a disaster for her career and confidence. Provenance: Jane Locker (signed to in ink by Kate Greenaway); 'Lilian' (gift inscribed to her by Laurence [Hodson], book collector).

London: George Routledge and Sons, [1880.] First edition, 24mo (91 x 88mm.) 12 coloured plates, numerous uncoloured illustrations, green endpapers. (Numerous names in ink from the 'Shore' family, toning.) Original beige pictorial cloth (minor soiling to lower cover). Provenance: Julia Shore (gift inscribed to on the 'Presented to..' leaf).

CUMMINGS, E.E. &. New York: Privately Printed, 1925. Limited edition, this being number 214 of 333 copies, 8vo (213 x 138mm.) (Toning, minor soiling to p.50.) Original green boards (loss to half of spine, rubbing to extremities). Note: limitation number in ink. Cummings's first book of poems had appeared two years earlier, in 1923. Cummings wanted that volume to be called 'Tuilips & Chimneys' but the publisher over-ruled and the book came out as 'Tuilips and Chimneys'- and with fewer poems than Cummings wanted. So Cummings privately printed this volume which contains those excluded poems and is titled, simply, '&'. An early example of his typographical originality. Provenance: John Housmann (name inscribed to front-free endpaper).

Limited edition, this being one of 400 copies only, folio (365 x 369mm.) 17 illustrations from etchings by Hockney, poems by Posner, errata leaf to rear. (Minor loss to rear pastedown.) Original black cloth, grey lettering to upper cover. Note: scarce.

EMIN, Tracey. Monoprint Diary. London: White Cube, 1991. First edition, signed and dated by Tracey Emin, 4to (228 x 203mm.) 25 illustrations of monoprints in black ink. Original card wrappers, black lettering to upper cover (sight toning to spine). Note: signed 'Tracey Emin, 09 x'. - And the companion work 'Monoprint Diary' [in blue ink], also signed by the artist, 1991, 4to (2).
