BIBLE, In English. The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments: Translated out of the Original Tongues, and with The Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. Edinburgh: by J.H. Blair and J. Bruce, 1799. 4to (258 x 204mm.) Title, and separate NT title, index to rear. (Toning, occasional browning.) Contemporary calf, brown morocco lettering piece to the spine, gilt borders (light rubbing to extremities). Note: loosely inserted a 1p. manuscript leaf in the hand of Baptist preacher C.H. Spurgeon containing part of a sermon he gave at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London, 1881. Provenance: Mary Maria Steptoe (name inscribed to front-free endpaper). - And a further four 18th century Bibles (including 'The Holy Bible' published by Mark Baskett, 1765, 4to, and a bound extract of 'Apocrypha' [n.d. circa 1800], 4to) (6).

MANUSCRIPT. [Three manuscript ledgers relating to legal matters in Devon, mainy relating to the Bampfyeld family of Poltimore House. N.p:] 1726-1807 Approximately 166pp. and 68pp. and 49pp., folio (413 x 310mm.) In various hands, mostly legible and often closely written papers relating to the estates of the Bampfyeld family in Devon and in Gloucester, covering disputes including that of Bampfyeld v. John Parker, indentures and contracts. (Some browning, occasional loose leaves.) Original paper wrappers (covers loose, worn). Note: the manor of Poltimore was the seat of the Bampfyeld family from 1300-1920. These papers relate mainly to the period 1750-1780, the period of Charles Warwick-Bampfyeld, M.P. for Exeter. Charles died after being shot by his housekeeper's husband, who believed Charles was having an affair with his wife.

CHURCHILL, Winston S. The Collected Works of Sir Winston Churchill. London: The Library of Imperial History, 1973-1976. 38 vols. Limited edition, this being number 1082 of 3000 sets of the Centenary Edition, 8vo (232 x 145mm.) Numerous illustrations. Original vellum, the Churchill coat-of-arms in gilt to upper covers, gilt lettering to spines, g.e., green slipcases (small knock to slipcase of volume 14 - 'Marlborough, His Life and Times', slight variation in tone to the vellum). Provenance: Nigel E. Bayman (limitation plate to front pastedowns). Note: includes the 4 volume 'Collected Essays of Winston Churchill'. There's also a limitation bookplate on the front pastedown of each volume. This was a significant publishing endeavour and 3000 sets were intended but the publisher was declared bankrupt before completing the project, so less than 2000 sets are in existence (38).
