Numerous steel-engraved plates, OT text with commentary by Robert Jamieson. (Spotting to margins and verso the plates, toning, spotting to rear blanks.) Contemporary black morocco with gilt fleur-de-lys and acorn tendrils within fillet borders surrounding a similar densely in-filled rectangle with elaborate corner-pieces, g.e. (lightly rubbed). - And a further three bound copies of the Bible (4).

BINDING. The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments: Translated out of the Original Tongues; and with The Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. London: George Eyre and Andrew Strahan, 1813. 4to (303 x 242mm.) Title, separate NT title, index to rear. (Marginal spotting and to preliminaries, damp-staining to rear leaves.) Contemporary red straight-grain morocco with an elaborate cathedral in gilt to covers, g.e. (rubbing to extremities, some fading and discolouring). - And a further seven Bibles (8).

BIBLE, In English. The Holy Bible, Conteyning the Old Testament, and the New: Newly Translated out of the Original Tongues & with the Former Translations Diligently Compared. [Arizona: Bible Museum, 2011]. Limited edition, this being number 479 of 1611 replica copies of the Original King James Bible, folio (399 x 264mm.) Illustrated title-page, double columns. (Minor marks to fore-edge.) Original brown calf replica of the original with King James I coat-of arms to upper cover, slipcase.

BIBLE, In Greek. Codex Sinaiticus. London and Massachusetts: British Library and Hendrickson, 2010. Folio (419 x 333mm.) Colour illustrations in facsimile, accompanying reference guide. Original cloth (crease and mark to spine), slipcase with mounted illustration to side panel (occasional mark).

BIBLE, In Latin. Codex Caesareus Upsaliensis… a Facsimile edition of an Echternach Gospel-Book of the Eleventh Century. Stockholm: Almqvist & Wiksell, 1971. Limited edition, this being one of 500 copies, folio (377 x 279mm.) Lithographic leaves with silk-screen gold-print, with accompanying volume. (Faint spotting to front-free endpaper.) Original vellum, gilt design and lettering to upper cover, cloth-covered slipcase with mounted paper label (rubbing with some marks). Note: known also as the 'Emperor's Bible', the Codex Caesareus was commissioned by the German Emperor Henry III and dates from 1050. It was written in the abbey of Echternach in Luxembourg.

Original cloth (crease to spine), slipcase with mounted illustration to side panel (rubbing and some discolouring to extremities). - And a further three volumes, including two more facsimiles ('Biblia Pauperum' by J. Ph. Berjeau, 1859, folio, and 'The Golden Legend' published by the Holbein Society, 1878, folio) (4).

(Occasional mark to fore-edge.) Original brown calf, gilt lettering to spine (small mark to lower cover), green cloth-covered slipcase (minor soiling to rear panel).

JOHNSON, Samuel. A Dictionary of the English Language: in which the words are deduced from their originals, and illustrated in their different significations by examples from the best writers. London: Harrison and Co., 1786. Folio (430 x 266mm.) Engraved portrait frontispiece, title in red and black. (Toning, marginal spotting to a few leaves of the 'Life', marginal damp-stain to 10A-10B, occasional browning.) Contemporary half calf, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (minor loss to spine ends, soiling). Note: known as 'Harrison's edition' this was the first 1 volume publication of Johnson's dictionary.

TORAH SCROLLS. A collection of six Torah scrolls on goatskin, some with turned wooden rollers, 19th Century, including 'The Song of Solomon' and 'The Book of Esther'.

EASTABROOK, Helen Slocum (compiler). Seventy Stories of the Old Testament. Portland, Maine: Bradford Press, 1938. 4to (318 x 220mm.) Numerous illustrations from woodcuts. (Toning.) Original red cloth (wear to spine ends). - And a quantity of approximately seventy volumes relating to illuminated manuscripts and the Bible (including 'The Holkham Bible, a facsimile' with commentary by Michelle P. Brown, 2007, 8vo) (a quantity).

MURRAY, James A.H., and others. A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles; Founded Mainly on Materials Collected by the Philological Society. Oxford: at the Clarendon Press, 1888-1933. 21 vols. in 20 (including supplement), first edition, large 4to (328 x 254mm.) (Repairs to title of volume 1, tear to half-title with chipping, some finger-marks and occasional creasing to preliminaries, volumes 6 part I and II, volume 7 part II and volume 8 part II lacking half-titles as issued.) Original publisher's deluxe plum half-morocco covers, gilt titling to spine (cloth reinforcement to hinges, rubbing to extremities, some fading and staining). Provenance: Worthing Library (bookplates to most pastedowns, stamps to margins) (21).

BINDINGS. - Constance SMEDLEY. The Daughter. London: Archibald Constable, 1908. First edition, 8vo (184 x 113mm.) (Toning to margins.) Contemporary green morocco bound by Ellen G. Woolrich, gilt ruled, an inscription in gilt on the turn-in, g.e. (rubbing to the raised bands). Note: the inscription in gilt reads 'To the Donjon, With Love and Thanks For All The Help'. It's possible that this copy was a presentation binding from the author. Constance Smedley founded the Lyceum Club for Women in London. She was brought up in Birmingham around many Arts and Craft connections. M. Tidcombe's book 'Women Binders 1880-1920' tells that Ellen G. Woolrich was an American who trained as a binder in London and, as she exhibited at the Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition, is likely to have trained under Sangorski and Sutcliffe u . - And a further twelve volumes (including a bound copy of George Speaight's 'Juvenile Drama', 1946, 8vo) (13).

Vol. 4 (only). Limited edition, this being number 508 of 600 copies, 4to (314 x 243mm.) Photogravure portrait of King George V, numerous illustrations. (Spotting to preliminaries and rear blanks, 1 plate loose.) Original red morocco, gilt lettering to upper cover and spine, t.e.g. (rubbing to extremities, scratches to upper cover). - And a further eleven volumes, mainly natural history (12).

Original black cloth, black lettering to spine, dust-jacket (faint mark to upper panel). Note: photographs covering mass migration in over thirty-five countries, some harrowing.

Limited edition, this being number 34 of 250 signed copies, oblong 4to (229 x 293mm.) 37 black and white photographic illustrations, essay by Rob Powell. Original grey cloth, dust-jacket (Slight toning, small crease to spine panel). Note: scarce. In 'The Photobook: A History', vol. 2, Martin Parr and Gerry Badger write 'As one practising the objectivity of the New Topographic mode, Davies allows his pictures to speak for themselves, yet by focusing on patterns of land usage, he asks questions about the kind of political and economic forces that determine the often poor results of allowing full reign to the market'.
