Photographs, Autographs and Ephemera

AUTOGRAPH. Two black and white photographs signed by Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred Thomas Goldie Gardner, relating to his world record speed attempts in the MG EX-135, each 7.5cm x 12.5cm, framed as one within an oak frame, together with a related black and white photograph of George Eyston in the 'Magic Midget'.

CARINGTON BOWLES (publisher). A monochrome engraving 'The Bubblers Medley, or a Sketch of the Times Being Europes Memorial for the Year 1720', relating to the South Sea Bubble, 38.5cm x 31cm, together with a watercolour of flowers from an album.

YACHT RACE. An archive of photographs, letters and correspondence relating to The Sunday Times Golden Globe Round the World Race in 1968-1969 and yachting, including 29 black and white photographs, many mounted on board and 24cm x 36.5cm, including two photographs signed by the winner of the race Robert Knox Johnston and two signed by Sir Francis Chichester, also including typed correspondence on The Sunday Times Golden Globe headed paper with entry conditions, updates and other letters, mostly issued by Robert Riddell, but including an a.l.s. by Bernard Moitessier and a later t.ls. regarding a voyage to Pitcairn Island. Note: Robert Knox-Johnston was the only one of the nine entrants to complete the race, becoming the first man to sail single-handed and non-stop around the world.

BRITISH TRANS-ARCTIC EXPEDITION. A group of 15 photographs mounted on board of the British Trans-Arctic Expedition in 1968-1969, including two photographs signed by all five members of the Expedition: Freddie Church, Allen Gill, Roy 'Fritz' Koener, Ken Hedges and Wally Herbert, two photographs signed by Wally Herbert and another signed by Alan Gill, each 23cm x 35.5cm, together with another smaller photograph and some related ephemera. Note: Herbert's expedition was the first to make it, undisputed, to the North Pole on foot, reached on 6 April 1969. In all, the expedition made a 3,800 mile surface journey from Alaska to Spitsbergen in Norway, over the North Pole.

AUTOGRAPHS. A small collection of clipped signatures, some mounted, including Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Stanley Baldwin, Thomas Beecham, Edward Burne-Jones, King George III, David Lloyd George, Nellie Melba, Thomas Moore, and Robert Southey.

AUTOGRAPHS, POLITICAL & MILITARY. A collection of signed letters and autographs of historical, political and military interest, including an autograph letter and a typed New Year greeting signed by Montgomery of Alamein, two autograph letters signed by Robert Peel, and a carbon copy of a letter dated 1958 signed 'Edward Duke of Windsor'; also including other letters and autographs, signed by H.H. Asquith, Marquess of Anglesey, Rowland Hill, Richard Owen, Marie Stopes, and Edward Heath.

AUTOGRAPHS, ART, MUSIC & LITERATURE. A collection of signed letters and autographs of art, music and literary interest, including a Poem-of-the-Month titled 'Francesca in Winter' signed by Stevie Smith, a t.l.s. signed by Hilaire Belloc, and two autograph letters signed by Feliks Topolski; also including other letters and autographs, signed by Vivien Leigh, Oliver Wendell Holmes, John Masefield, Bernard Miles, Marcus Stone and George Robey.

EPHEMERA. A collection of letterheads, billheads and invoices, many of Sussex interest, including W. Budd & Sons of Petersfield, Goldring & Sons of Midhurst, and Ernest G. Holland of Littlehampton, together with a group of ephemera including some newspapers.

PHOTOGRAPHS. A group of 22 photographs, the majority of hunting interest, including an albumen-print photograph of a shooting party, and others of huntsmen on horseback.

PHOTOGRAPHS. Two leather-bound albums compiled by Reginald Augustus Studd, containing approximately 83 mounted albumen and machine-print photographs, leaves 30cm x 40cm, the majority relating to Eton College, or Continental views and national costumes, but also including two views of a royal procession, a photograph of cricketers and a photograph of the Hawa Mahal in Jeypore (Jaipur), India. Note: Reginald Augustus Studd was an English first-class cricketer and from a noted cricketing family. The albums bear his initials on the upper covers.

PHOTOGRAPHS. A conjoined panoramic photograph of the Delhi Durbar, 20cm x 57cm, within a stained wood frame, together with two further mounted photographs published by R.W. Cartwright & Co of military interest.

FOOTBALL PROGRAMMES. A collection of football programmes, the majority relating to London teams, including a 1948 F.A. Challenge Cup Final Blackpool v Manchester United, 1950 F.A. Challenge Cup Final Arsenal v Liverpool, 1952 F.A. Challenge Cup Final Blackpool v Bolton Wanderers, and a Jules Rimet Cup World Championship 1966 Official Souvenir Programme, together with a Middlesex Wanderers Jubilee Dinner menu signed by Henry E. Ford.

MAPS. A group of seven folding London Transport maps circa 1938-1939, comprising 'Underground Map', 'Underground Railway Map', 'Bus Map Central Area', 'Green Line Coach Map', 'Bus Map Central Area', 'Trolleybus & Tram Map' and 'Bus Map Central Area'.

ALBUMS. A group of five family autograph albums containing inscriptions, amateur watercolours and drawings, all early 20th century, together with an album of snapshot photographs including views of a wedding and a collection of memorial fund stamps.

PHOTOGRAPHS. A large collection of photographs in albums and loose, the majority 20th century and small format, but also including a few cartes-de-visite and cabinet-size photographs.

EPHEMERA. A collection of various ephemera, including a folding albumen-print photograph titled 'A Panorama of Stockholm' by Axel Lindahls, overall 24.5cm x 106cm, also including an accounts book, a scrap album, menus and prints.

THEATRE ROYAL, BRIGHTON. An Edward VIII playbill for Theatre Royal, Brighton, dated March 16th 1936, printed in red and blue advertising a performance of 'The Greeks Had a Word For It', 76cm x 24.5cm.

THEATRE ROYAL, BRIGHTON. An early Victorian playbill for Theatre Royal, Brighton, dated February 7 1839, advertising a performance of 'Grace Darling', 37cm x 25cm, within a Hogarth style frame, together with three further playbills advertising performances at the Theatre Royal, Brighton in the 19th century.

ROMANTIC GUITAR MUSIC. A William IV playbill advertising a performance by 'The Celebrated Guitarist Giulio Regondi' at the Town-hall Alnwick, 14th November 1833, inscribed with a letter verso by J. Regondi to Dr. Billing, 28cm x 22cm, within a gilt frame. Note: Giulio Regondi was a child prodigy on the guitar and an instrumental figure in the development of the guitar as a concert instrument. The manuscript letter to Dr Billing, a patron of the guitarist, provides a fascinating insight into the life of a touring musician in the early 19th century, specifically the 6-string Romantic guitarist (at this date the 6-string guitar was an instrument in its infancy), the manuscript alludes to the Violinist Nicollo Paganini as a womanizer, the luthier Gennaro Fabricatore, various patrons of Regondi, as well as the guitarist's itinerary and hopes for the future.
