An early 18th century crossbanded walnut longcase clock, the eight day movement with five turned and finned pillars, anchor escapement and striking on a bell, the brass break arch dial with subsidiary date dial to the arch flanked by pierced and cast dolphin and scroll spandrels, the silvered chapter ring with black Roman hours and outer Arabic minutes, framing a matted centre with silvered subsidiary seconds above a polished oval panel inscribed 'D. Quare & S. Horseman, London' and numbered '179', cornered by cast and pierced mask and scroll spandrels, the hood with flat top above an arched moulded cornice, glazed door and turned Doric columns, the trunk with arched door ornamented with ebony and boxwood stringing, on a similarly decorated base and plinth, height 232cm, with pendulum, two brass cased weights and winder (some restoration and alterations). Note: Daniel Quare and his former apprentice Stephen Horseman are recorded as being in partnership at Kings Arms, Exchange Alley, between 1718 and 1733. Following the death of Quare in 1724, Horseman continued to make clocks in the style of Quare until the business was declared bankrupt in 1733.
