George Romney - Half Length Portrait of Lady Laetitia Beauchamp-Proctor née Johnson, oval oil on canvas, circa 1780, label verso, 75cm x 62cm, within a gilt composition frame. Note: Lady Beauchamp-Proctor had seven sittings with George Romney between 20th July and 16th August, 1780, and paid Romney's 18-guinea fee on 15th May 1871. On 26th May Thomas Allwood listed in his framing book 'an oval 3/4' at a price of £2 12s 6d for Lady Beauchamp-Proctor. We are grateful to Alex Kidson for confirming the attribution to Romney. Provenance: Langley Park, Norfolk, thence by descent to Rev. Sydney Beauchamp, subsequently purchased by the vendor's family (a cousin of Rev. Beauchamp), for £50 in 1915. References: Alex Kidson, 'George Romney: A Complete Catalogue of his Paintings' (New Haven and London, 2015), catalogue No. 69 as 'Mary Beauchamp-Proctor' (untraced); George Paston, 'George Romney' (Methuen & Co, London, 1903), p. 191; Humphrey Ward & W. Roberts, 'Romney: A Biographical and Critical Essay vol.11' (Thos, Agnew & Sons, London, 1904) p.9, where the authors conflate the entry with a portrait of Isabella Anne Ingram Shepherd.

Robert Edge Pine - Half Length Profile Portrait of Sir William Beauchamp-Proctor, oil on canvas, circa 1772, 65cm x 54.5cm, within a gilt composition frame. Note: William, only son of Thomas Beauchamp by Anne his wife, daughter and co-heir of William Proctor of Epsom, Surrey, sister of George Proctor of Langley Park; baptised 11th May, 1722; M.A., Oxford, 1742. He took the name of Proctor, after that of Beauchamp, in 1744, on inheriting the Langley estate. Created a Baronet 20th February, 1744-5; M.P. for Middlesex, 1747-68; Colonel of the East Middlesex Militia, 1759; K.B., May, 1761. He married, first, 1746, his cousin Jane, daughter of Christopher Towers of Huntsmore, Bucks, who died in 1761, and second, 13th May, 1762, Laetitia, eldest daughter and co-heir of Henry Johnson of Great Berkhampstead. He died at Langley Park 13th September, 1773, aged 51, and was buried at Tottenham. Provenance: Langley Park, Norfolk; by descent within the Beauchamp-Proctor family. References: described in Prince Frederick Duleep Singh's 'Portraits in Norfolk Houses' (Jarrold and Sons, 1928), pp.377-378. A photograph published in 'Country Life' (2nd July 1927) shows this portrait hanging above a doorway in the library at Langley Park.
